In the foreground, the 'Swan' (Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam) with curious crowds streaming in. It was the first time the Disney cruise ship docked in the port. In the background, the antique steel Hefbrug, which very occasionally still has to be opened; for example, when a new sailing ship with very high masts is delivered by the shipyard located upstream near the Van Brienenoordbrug (not visible). For this fast little boat, nothing needed to be opened or should one actually say closed(?). Is a bridge closed or is it open? It just depends on which means of transport you use to pass the bridge. The North Island with its somewhat shabby-looking buildings makes the composition realistic.
Growing up in highly urbanised Rotterdam, Homan was increasingly inspired by female forms and defining body parts.
