The Ballets Russes was a ballet company from Russia, founded by Sergey Djagilev. Between 1909 and 1929 this "Russian ballet" was performed in many western countries, in a kind of itinerant existence, in ever-changing compositions, with Djagilev as a constant factor. The famous company produced many important dancers and choreographers and was known for its innovativeness in choreography, music, costumes and set design.
