About ‘Autumn Measure II — Clearing’ by Whale & Sons

Dark and white tree trunks stretch across the full width of this panoramic composition. Red, orange and yellow form the foliage, whilst in the centre a cooler blue-grey area breaks through the density. This opening serves as the focal point of the work and divides the forest into two fields of richer colour.

Autumn Measure II — Clearing is about interruption within repetition. On the left and right, tree trunks and autumn colours pile up. In the centre, the visual intensity lessens. This gives the composition a clear breathing space without losing its rhythm.

The white tree trunks play an important role here. They act as light markers amongst the dark trees and reinforce the vertical structure. Red and yellow accents recur across the entire width, connecting the different parts of the image.

The texture remains visible throughout. Areas of colour consist of grain, patches and irregular edges; tree trunks are not sharply defined but are incorporated into the same material surface. Within the series, *Clearing* is the work in which space itself forms the most important counterbalance to the intensity of autumn.
