Autun is a town in the Burgundy region of France. Autun is located in the department of Saone-et-Loire and is a sub-prefecture of them. In 1999 there were 16 419 people, which are called Autunois.
Autun is located in a hilly area with woods just outside the natural park of Morvan. The city lies on the river Arroux.
Autun owes its name to the Roman princes Augustus, who founded the city Augustodunum around the beginning of our era on the site of the current Autun. He wanted Gaul found a town that would express the power of Rome. Therefore Autun got some impressive buildings; Some still see the remains. Autun was founded on the road between Marseille and the Channel coast, or between Lyon and Boulogne, which was important both for the market as strategically.
In the Middle Ages Autun had another golden age. It was a religious center and got a kathedraal.Het most striking building in the town is the Saint-Lazare cathedral, whose construction began in the 12th century. The tympanum of the main portal is considered one of the masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture. It represents the Last Judgement. The sculptor, hostage Bert (Gislebertus), has made his name under the feet of Christ.
The Romans were a few city gates and preserved Roman theater. There is just outside the city ruins of a Roman temple (Temple de Janus). In the old theater a historical sound and light show is staged each year.
