The literal translation for Azuma Nishiki-e is "eastern capital brocade pictures". It was used as a synonym for Japanese colour woodblock prints in general. Japanese colour woodblock prints are a specific type of printmaking that originated in Japan in the second half of the 18th century and whose traditions have been continued uninterrupted to this day, with few exceptions, exclusively by Japanese artists.
