The BMW Type E9 was by the way the first model at BMW, which was created especially as an art car and which took part in Le Mans 1975, artistically designed in this way.
However, the idea and initiative came from the French auctioneer and racing driver Hervé Poulain, who had his BMW 3.0 CSL painted by Alexander Calder. And 1 year later the New Yorker Frank Stella was allowed to cover a white 3.0 CSL with black lines in graphic style and this E9 was allowed to ride in Le Mans 1976 designed in this way. Further type cars by and at BMW are currently being created until 2017. Until 2017 there were 18 art cars and the last one was a BMW M6 GT3 designed by Cao Fei.
