Ariadne is a figure from Greek and Roman mythology. She is the daughter of King Minos of Crete and Queen Pasiphaë, both children of gods. Ariadne is the goddess of passion. Her Roman equivalent is Ariana.
Ariadne is said to have helped the hero Theseus escape from the labyrinth. She gave him a sword and a ball of wool (Ariadne's thread). He had to unwind the thread while entering the labyrinth. Ariadne agreed to help Theseus on condition that, once he had found his way out of the labyrinth, he would marry Ariadne and return to Athens together with her. Theseus killed with his sword the Minotaur who lived in the labyrinth, and thanks to Ariadne's thread found the exit again.
Theseus, voluntarily or forced by Dionysus, left Ariadne on Naxos after his return from Crete. The myth is closely linked to Dionysus: this god is said to have kept her there and made her his wife.
