The history of the current main organ, the Bätz organ, begins in the 16th century.
At that time the Dom Church was the main church of the diocese of Utrecht, to which a college of high clergy was connected: the Dom chapter.
Domproost Cornelis van Mierop ensured that the Utrecht organ builder Peter Jansz. de Swart was commissioned in 1568 to build a new organ. Three years later, on 24 October 1571, the newly built organ was inspected. It stood in the northern transept of the church and was equipped with three keyboards and a pedal.
