The barn owl is an inhabitant of (semi-)open landscapes, in our case mostly farmland. It likes to settle in buildings such as barns or church towers. There it looks for quiet, dark hiding places as a roosting place for daytime and as a nesting place. Barn owls lead a secluded life and become active after dark to hunt primarily field mice in the open. They are generally site loyal and sensitive to winters with prolonged frost and snow.
