At first glance you wouldn't say it, but barnacles are among crustaceans. They have a limestone skeleton that looks like a small volcano. There's even a species that's so hot. The house of a barnacle is made up of several plates. At the top there are flaps that can be opened, and there the barnacle can stick out its catching legs. They look like a fan. This is how the animals extract plankton from the seawater. At low tide, barnacles close their valves. These barnacles have attached themselves to a wooden pole in Zeeland along the North Sea coast and are quietly waiting for the tide to rise.
