Geologically speaking, Iceland is a very young country, it is between 16 and 17 million years old, while the earth has been around 4.5 billion years. It was created by volcanic eruptions on the ocean floor. The country is located in the middle of the Mid-Atlantic ridge, a separation area of a number of tectonic plates that slowly drift apart, about 2 cm per year.
Because these plates drift apart, the underlying magma has the opportunity to surface and fill in the cracks that have arisen. The country is therefore mainly composed of volcanic material and rock.
Iceland is still being made and shaped: the earth coughs, burps and vomits in many places.
