De Rijp is a village and former municipality in the municipality of Alkmaar, in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is the birthplace of Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater. De Rijp was founded in the late thirteenth century. The place name means 'bank edge' De Rijp originated on the southern part of the dike around Schermereiland. The town was very prosperous in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to whaling, herring fishing and hemp processing.
