Actually, these are not really roses, they are 'helleborus orientalis', or hellebore, a perennial flowering plant actually in the buttercup family. They flower in the depths of winter and during Lent, hence their common name.
My mother has a lot of Lenten Rose in her garden and they are really lovely plants to look at. They grow in the shady areas and really provide a patch of interest in the winter garden. They come in various light shades including variations of cream, pinks and purple. Such, architectural plants with wonderful contrasts between the flowers and the leaves, they really grab your attention and they make wonderful subjects for photographers like me. However, it should be noted they are poisonous and handled with care.
