The (European) bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a bird belonging to the bee-eater family (Meropidae). The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus.[2] He based his work on earlier descriptions and illustrations by Pierre Belon, Conrad Gesner, Ulisse Aldrovandi, Francis Willughby and John Ray.
