About "Bee-eater feeds its young"

About the artwork

Bee-eaters live mainly in warm parts of Europe, but successful breeding bee-eaters have also been observed in the Netherlands. Bee-eaters eat insects and are agile flyers. In flight, they catch larger insects. They are mainly found near steep walls of water; rivers, ponds and lakes, where they excavate a nest tunnel in a steep wall. They are strikingly coloured with blue parts, yellow throat and back, reddish-brown upper parts and black eye stripe and wing trailing edge. They have rather long and slightly downward-curved bill and are conspicuous in flight by typical hovering flight and sound. With its pointed wings, it cuts through the air. Striking tail with protruding middle tailpins. Has short legs. The young has a fainter green upper surface. In winter plumage much fainter. They make a rolling and whistling "pruuu, pruuu" sound, with variations. In flight and in perching.
