Berlin West Skyline

by Frank Henning

The photograph shows the impressive urban skyline of West Berlin, with modern hotel and office buildings rising against an exceptionally colourful evening sky.
The image is characterised by a fascinating interplay between modern architecture and an atmospheric twilight setting. Particularly striking is the sky, which glows in vivid shades of rose, pink, orange and violet. The expansive cloud formations stretch across the entire image, lending the scene an almost painterly quality.
At the centre of the photograph are several high-rise buildings, each with a distinct architectural style. On the left stands the Waldorf Astoria, a striking, rectangular building with a light-coloured natural stone façade, clean lines and numerous narrow windows. The illuminated floors and the golden-yellow highlights on the façade create a striking contrast to the colourful sky. In front of it stands another multi-storey building with a regular arrangement of windows, whose illuminated interiors hint at the bustling atmosphere of a modern city district.
The composition is designed to create a balanced yet dynamic mood. The varying heights of the buildings create a varied skyline, whilst the clean vertical lines of the architecture provide a striking contrast to the soft, flowing cloud formations. The sky occupies a large part of the frame, lending the cityscape a sense of vastness. The modern metropolitan architecture blends with the natural evening light and the artificial lighting. The intense colour scheme, the illuminated windows and the striking building silhouettes are intended to make the photograph an expressive depiction of urban aesthetics at dusk.
