About ‘Between awe and eternity’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

Even time itself falls silent before the imposing figure of Wat Muang. Thailand’s largest Buddha statue rises like a golden mountain of stillness and light. Its hands rest calmly and perfectly, as though they have been holding the world’s breath for centuries.
At the foot of this monumental figure stands a woman, as small as a fleeting thought compared to the immeasurable grandeur of the Buddha. Gently, she touches the statue’s fingertips — a tender gesture full of hope. According to local belief, these touches bestow good fortune, success and the strength to walk one’s own path with confidence. Yet at this moment, it seems as though she is seeking not only a blessing, but also a connection to something greater than herself.
The gold of the statue glows warmly in the sunlight, transforming stone and metal into something almost alive. The massive fingers do not appear stern or distant, but gentle and protective, like an invitation to peace.
A silent dialogue arises between person and monument: the desire for happiness on the one hand, and the timeless serenity of the Buddha on the other. And perhaps that is precisely the true meaning of this place — in the fleeting sensation that hope becomes tangible.
