The bittern is a very stealthy bird. It is the smallest heron-like bird in the Netherlands. The male has a magnificent plumage. They mainly emerge at dusk or 'night. They live along rivers and marshes. In autumn it mainly leaves for East Africa and returns in spring. Very rare.
