The green woodpecker is a bird you will hear calling in its territory especially in early spring. It is a kind of laughing sound. It hacks out in trees and often these are oak trees. The male has an attractive red cap on his head. Its head resembles a black and red mask.
The young are fed mainly on ant eggs.
