Canary Wharf is a large financial centre under development in the Tower Hamlets district of the British capital, London. The area is home to three of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom: One Canada Square (235 m), HSBC Tower and Citigroup Centre (both 200 m). Canary Wharf is located in the Docklands, the former port of London, in the east of the city. After a long period of decay, the construction of a new business centre in this area began in 1988. Canary Wharf was identified in the London Plan of 2015 as one of the three major centres in the Greater London area that were expected to become metropolitan centres in the decades following that year.
