The black-necked grebe is a migratory bird and about the same size as the crested diver but in summer it has a black neck. Its head also has a different shape. In the black-necked grebe, it is higher and not flat. It has a black head with a golden yellow ear plume. The lower beak of the black-necked grebe is curved upwards and therefore appears "swooped", the beak of the crested grebe is straight, dagger-shaped.
