Blokzijl is a place in the Kop van Overijssel.
In Blokzijl there is an old sea lock which formed the mouth of the Steenwijker Aa as early as the 16th century. The peat, which was mined in the hinterland, was a particularly important source of activity. Johan de Ligny, Count of Aremberg, Stadtholder of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel, can be mentioned as a great stimulator of this area. He had the access canals improved and constructed a harbour basin for trade purposes. During the Eighty Years' War the town was fortified by Diederick van Sonoy in 1581, in order to provide a support point for the State fleet on the east side of the Zuiderzee and a base of operations for the troops against the Spaniards. The name Blokzijl, or fortified sluice, came about at that time.
