In ancient Egypt, a lunar eclipse was considered an evil omen. The god Seth strikes out one of his two holy eyes in a duel with the god Horus. In European mythology, it is rather witches who celebrate a coven during a lunar eclipse, turning the full moon blood-red with their witchcraft.
