About ‘Blue Planet Copenhagen’ by Frans Nijland

The Blue Planet, Copenhagen
The photo shows The Blue Planet, Denmark's national aquarium, located on the coast near Kastrup in the Copenhagen area. This building opened in March 2013 and has since made a name for itself as one of Scandinavia's most impressive and iconic architectural attractions.

What makes this place so special is not only what lies within its walls — thousands of marine animals from all over the world in 53 different tanks containing a total of more than 7 million litres of water — but above all how the building itself tells a story.

The design is inspired by the dynamics of water in motion: the organic, flowing forms are reminiscent of a whirlpool or an ocean current, as if the building literally draws you into the underwater world. The architecture leads you from the outside to the inside and symbolises the journey from land to the world beneath the sea.

Designed by Danish architectural firm 3XN, The Blue Planet is a masterpiece of modern architecture — both sculptural and functional. The building has won international recognition for its unique shape, which from the air evokes the suggestion of a churning mass of water and from the ground appears inviting and mysterious.

Whether you look at the gentle curves of the façade, the glistening aluminium cladding or the way light and shadow play across the surface, this is a place where architecture and nature merge into a harmonious whole.
