During my walk in Ibiza town, Dalt Vila, I passed this photogenic blue door on the street 'Carrer Major'. I really liked the colour palette, it very nicely captures the atmosphere of Ibiza.
Ibiza Old Town, known as Dalt Vila, has a rich and diverse history dating back thousands of years. The town was originally founded by the Phoenicians around 654 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe.
After the Phoenicians, the city was conquered by the Romans, who left their mark on its architecture and infrastructure. Later, during Moorish rule, Dalt Vila was further developed and fortified. The Moorish influences are still visible in the narrow streets and remnants of Islamic architectural styles.
In the 16th century, under the reign of King Philip II of Spain, Dalt Vila's famous city walls were built to protect the city from pirates and invaders. These impressive defences, still largely intact, played a crucial role in protecting the people of Ibiza.
Today, Dalt Vila is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved examples of a fortified town in the Mediterranean. It is a place where history and culture come together, and where visitors can take a journey through time as they stroll the old streets and enjoy the breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding countryside.
