At the blue hour, the hour just before sunrise, the passageway between St Martin’s Basilica and the old vicarage lies quiet and deserted. The warm glow from the lamppost falls upon the brick walls and the solitary bicycle leaning against them. The contrast between the deep blue of the sky and the soft light on the street lends the scene an atmosphere of tranquillity and a touch of melancholy. The bicycle raises questions: will it be collected, or has it now become part of the street scene? A photograph that invites the imagination.
