Here are the main reasons behind this iconic architectural style:

1. Practical protection against heat
Cooling effects: The light-coloured combination of white walls and coloured shutters reflects the intense sunlight.

Insect repellent:
Traditionally, a little copper sulphate was mixed into the blue paint. This mixture (known as ‘loulaki’) kept flies and mosquitoes at bay.

2. Historical and political background
National identity: In 1938, the then dictator Ioannis Metaxas ordered the houses in the Cyclades and other islands to be painted blue and white.
Symbol of resistance: The blue and white reflected the colours of the Greek flag. During times of oppression, it served as a silent sign of patriotism.
Uniform townscape: In the 1970s, this colour combination was made compulsory by law for aesthetic and tourism-related reasons.
3. Cultural symbolism and aesthetics
Protection against the ‘evil eye’: In Greek folklore, the colour blue (cyan) is regarded as a protective charm against envy and misfortune.
