This image is of a very old vine that may have been brought from Japan by Philipp Franz von Siebold. This doctor and botanist travelled in the 19th century to the island of Deshima, where the Dutch were the only ones allowed to have trade relations from outside Japan. Siebold was a doctor and brought many plants, seeds and images with him to the Netherlands. In the Hortus Botanicus Leiden there is also a very old Wisteria Chinensis that he brought with him.
