Braunau am Inn is the oldest and with 16,380 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2015) most populous city in the Upper Austrian Innviertel. It is located about 60 km north of Salzburg and about half a mile from Munich and west of Linz.
As the seat of the district administration of the district of Braunau am Inn, Braunau forms a cross-border center for the German city of Simbach am Inn, located on the opposite bank of the Inn river. The competent Austrian judicial district is the judicial district Braunau am Inn.
