Wooden breakwaters are often placed on coastal beaches to break waves and thus reduce erosion. On Domburg beach in the Netherlands, these wooden breakwaters are a common sight. They consist of long rows of vertically placed wooden poles sticking up from the seabed and beach. The sound of the surf and the view of the sea and horizon make the sight of the breakwaters on Domburg beach a distinctive and soothing scene often associated with the Dutch coast.
