As early as the year 1080, a precursor of today's castle, a so-called motte castle, came into being. During the Middle Ages, the motte (castle hill) was flattened and a castle was built on the site. Because of its location near the river Aa, it was a valuable asset as this is where the ships passed from the Peel to 's-Hertogenbosch. Owners of the castle included the Van Glymes and Cirksena families. Count Johan Cirksena of East Friesland built an outer bailey made of brick with natural stone bands or speklagen. The west and south wings of this have been preserved.
