About the artwork

The Church was in the largest church building of Holland, but is never completed. Construction began in 1417. In 1456, there was a big fire and in 1482 was on the money and hit the building ceased. Only the three-aisled nave of the Basilica and the built-in tower were completed. The church building represents the Brabant Gothic.
In 1572 the images and altars were robbed or destroyed by the sea beggars. In the context of the Reformation, the Church was deprived of the Catholic parish and made available for the Protestant worship.
In the Church is William of Orange on 12 June 1575 married to his third wife Charlotte of Bourbon. The wedding service was led by the preacher Jean T. He belonged to the Further Reformation. A stained glass window, the so-called Orange window, reminds of this marriage. The other three stained glass Windows in the Church are the Coppelstockraam, the Angelus Merula window and the Rochus Meeuwis son window.
