These animals are large and solidly built. In physique, the sexes differ little, but the heavy males sometimes grow to be twice as heavy as the more petite females. The thick fur is usually dark brown, although the colour can vary from blond to black. On the strong front legs are long, non-retractable claws. Furthermore, they have a distinctive shoulder hump.
