About the artwork

Bruntenhof and Lepelenburg in Utrecht. The Bruntskameren is a complex of fifteen one-room houses. They were commissioned by the lawyer Frederik Brunt on the yard of his house Klein Lepelenburg in 1621 for the benefit of poor widows, who received food and fuel in addition to free housing. The main building became reception rooms for his heirs and contains a baroque carved gate. The cottages were first part of Lepelenburg but later the streets were named Bruntenhof and Bruntensteeg. The name Bruntenhof comes from the communal garden behind the one-room houses. On the hill is villa Lievendaal. This is the only villa in the inner city of Utrecht and a national monument. Built in 1862, the villa was deliberately placed on a hill so that the residents did not have to look out on the poverty of the adjacent Bruntskameren. This photo was taken at dawn on 16 December 2018, Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset.
