The gate was part of the second medieval city wall and was located at the end of the Brusselsestraat, where it formed the main entrance to the city from the west (Hasselt, Antwerp, Brussels). Joannes Christianus Antonius Alexander ("Alexander" or "Alexandre") Schaepkens (Maastricht, 23 June 1815 - there, 1 September 1899) was a Dutch-Belgian[note 1] painter, lithographer, watercolourist, draughtsman, drawing teacher and amateur historian. He drew, lithographed, etched and painted buildings and landscapes in Maastricht and its surroundings, Dutch and Belgian Limburg and the province of Liège.
