About ‘Bumblebee’ by Jennie Smallenbroek

Bumblebee - reduction linocut print.

This is an original handmade linocut print. The original is available in a Limited Edition edition of 40 through my website.
The first photo attached is number 1/40 and comes in yellow, orange, grey, brown, green, blue and black.

It is printed with Caligo Safe Wash oil paint.
The original image size is 29 x 29 cm, on 200-gram acid-free watercolour paper measuring 35 x 50 cm.

I spent over two months designing and printing it. A total of 54 hours.
Videos of the whole process of each layer can be seen on YouTube and on my website.

My inspiration comes from the Art Nouveau style, which I love.
My studio is in a rural area, and I can hear the sheep, horses and goats as I sit and paint.
I love animals and enjoy painting them.

This is a varied edition. Each print is handmade and may be slightly different. I may have used the roller slightly differently or mixed a colour slightly differently.

It is a reduced lino print, in the sense that more lino is cut away for each of the print layers. Once I complete a layer of printing and start cutting into the lino, there is no turning back and mistakes cannot be corrected or changes made, so a lot of care and planning is required. This image has 9 cutting and printing layers.

I'm a visual artist, illustrator, textile and surface pattern designer, and author.
My work is the result of a multidisciplinary learning process through fashion, fine arts and textiles and it is mainly focused on handmade illustration and pattern design applied to different products and surfaces. I love making dazzling art with my paintbrush, oils and watercolors, and designing colorful patterns to make common things more beautiful.
