Bureau Centraal was the headquarters of a large family business in the metal industry.
The de Wendel family had been involved in industry since the beginning of the 18th century. They quickly developed into the largest ironworks in Lorraine.
At the beginning of the 19th century an upgrade project took place to modernize the blast furnaces. The upgrade was extremely successful and they became the third largest ironworks in France. By 1870 they were the largest, producing 112,500 tons of iron and 134,500 tons of pig iron per year. To keep up with this production they employed 7,000 men.
