The buzzard has a highly variable coloured plumage, which is mostly brown with small, white spots. However, there are also birds with plumage that is almost entirely white. In flight, the buzzard can be recognised by its broad, angular wings, short neck and spread, short tail. In flight, the buzzard regularly lets out a loud mewing call. The buzzard is the most common bird of prey in the Netherlands. On warm days, the buzzard can often be seen high in the sky, where the bird hovers in circles on the rising warm air. If the weather is not suitable for this, the bird hunts sitting down from a high vantage point. Its food consists mainly of mice, rabbits and other small animals. Buzzards are often seen near motorways, where the birds scout for animals that have fallen victim to traffic. PHOTO: Buzzard in flight Gaasterland Nij Amerika, Nijemirdum
