Catherine of Alexandria (or "Saint Catherine, the Great Martyr") († November 25, 307) is among the most popular saints of the Middle Ages. Her name is derived from the Greek word katharos which means "pure" or "pure". Throughout history, her originally Greek biography (c. 6th century) has become very intertwined with folk tales and new legends; only on the basis of the most original texts can anything reliable be said about her life.
Catherine is one of the fourteen distress helpers. She is invoked as a protector against the plague and to guard chastity. She is also sometimes seen as a protector during childbirth.
Carl (von) Blaas (Nauders, Tiro, Austria 28 April 1815 - Vienna, 19 March 1894) was an Austrian painter.
