Cold is not a problem for Scottish highlanders, especially in the last "slack" winters. The thick, long-haired winter coat does keep them warm. To prepare for the scarce winter months, highlanders eat their fill in the summer and fall. This way they start the winter well-fed. With their grazing they ensure that the landscape remains open and varied, so that many birds, butterflies and special plants can live there.
