About "Capuchin monkey."

by Wouter Van der Zwan

About the artwork

The brown capuchin monkey lives in South America and is found in tropical rainforests, but also in open forests where bee moves in fields on the ground. A characteristic feature of the capuchin monkey is the black straight hair on its forehead, which occasionally resembles a wig. They are very agile and jump easily from one branch to another.
The capuchin monkey lives solitary (alone) or in groups of up to 20 animals. In the group, one dominant male reproduces, so the offspring are all his. They have no territory, as habitats regularly overlap. These monkeys can deposit scents by rubbing their hands with urine and smearing it on their fur. However, they are very nurturing animals and groom their fur regularly. The capuchin monkey's enemies are birds of prey; in fact, they are so wary of them that they sound the alarm even when they see harmless birds. They like to eat fruits, insects, larvae, eggs, young birds, frogs, lizards and bats.

On a beautiful Sunday in July, I drove alone to Zooparc Overloon. A 2-hour drive. So that I could quietly observe the lion's behaviour, search for the right viewpoint and wait for the right moment to take the picture.

I find it important to capture an intense facial expression and/or eye contact. So that when you see the photo, you feel like you are in the jungle yourself.
