About the artwork

Spitzweg loved scenes in this picturesque corner of Munich's old town, away from the noise and crowds of the people. Later in life he had an apartment and studio in this area. The old bachelor got up early to water the flowers in his roof garden. The time on St. Peter's church clock on the left background is seven o'clock. Munich's oldest parish church, also known as "Old Peter", is located near Marienplatz. The morning sun gives her a warm light and thanks to the loving care of the bachelor the plants bloom. The roses show their first blossoms, ivy and coltsfoot run to the foliage, and the delphinium has grown high enough to be clad in blue in late summer. A dragonfly passes by, a canary in the cage on the right welcomes the new day by singing its song. The occupant of the romantic attic room may be a poet or a writer, but although the poet is poor, he seems to be quite well off, if his neat dress is something to be with. His glasses and the spring behind his right ear certainly indicate that he is a representative of writing.
Just like in the painting of the Flower Friend, the idyllic scene here also looks fragile. Because Spitzweg repeated his metaphorical views in the birdcages: symbols of isolation or imprisonment of his character in the attic. The bird feathers are the same yellow color as the lone bachelor's dressing gown.
