About "Catering terrace and water pump at De Plaats, IJsselstein."

by Tony Buijse

About the artwork

Around 1600 the well was replaced by a water pump. In 1940 the water pump was superfluous and was demolished. The current water pump at De Plaats in IJsselstein dates from 1977 and was placed there to dress the square in style.
The Place had been a marketplace since the Middle Ages. This was also the central meeting place because at that time there was the only water supply here, first a well and later the water pump.
The large (high) building at Utrechtsestraat 62 is a national monument. It is an imposing mansion with a high rising gable roof. It has a beautifully decorated door section and a shop window below. There is currently a clothing store in it.
The photo is made in black and white, which gives it an artistic timeless look. Details are beautifully and correctly emphasized. Due to the lack of color, this can no longer cause distraction. Composition, shapes, lines, fine gray nuances, structures and contrast ensure that the subject is given a much more prominent place in the image.
