This goat herder walks through Niger in search of food. The critters nibble on anything edible. They are not leashed and so they sometimes walk elsewhere. Goats are quite a pest in the sahel countries. They are quite tough and can survive well. This comes at the expense of trees and plants that are so much needed. Of course, climbing is bad enough but these beasts can be the death knell for a lot of wildlife. If goats cannot find grass or other edible crops, they are even content with a piece of cardboard. 'And they don't shy away from prickly bushes either. Growing herds of livestock may be a more significant cause of unrest in the Sahel. Because animals mostly roam loose, they damage vegetation, giving erosion free rein and pushing the Sahara southwards. More and more animals compete for less and less grazing land. The herdsman was fine with me photographing him.
