A merry fiddler (Gerard van Honthorst, 1623).
Photographed by me (national museum), edited (framed) and made into a cheerful picture.
A merry fiddler holding a birchmeier. A smiling man leans out of a window in front of which an Oriental rug hangs. In right hand he holds up a birch meier with wine, in left hand a violin with bow. On his head a hat with plumes.
Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656), oil on canvas, 1623
Gerard van Honthorst was a Utrecht painter in the Golden Age and he was one of the best followers of Caravaggio. Van Honthorst travelled to Italy and came to live with an important patron in the palace where he had a huge art collection including works by Caravaggio at his disposal to study. Van Honthorst was very famous in his time, even more famous than Rembrandt van Rijn. He therefore did great things for important people such as Pope Urban VIII, England's King Charles I, Prince Frederick Henry and Christiaan IV, King of Denmark.
