About ‘Chijmes Hall Singapore’ by Bart Hendrix

CHIJMES Singapore, now Chijmes Hall began in 1854 as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ), a Catholic convent, girls' school and orphanage. The building grew into an important education and shelter centre. 'MES' was added to the name, making the pronunciation 'CHIJMES' sound like the English word 'chimes'. In the 1980s, the school moved and the complex was restored (early 1990s) and transformed into what it is today: a cultural entertainment centre with restaurants, cafes and event venues.
