This is Clematis Perle D'Azure, or Blue Pearl. It has large flowers, about four inches (10 cm) wide that have a purple tinge with a touch of pink near the base of the petals and wonderful light green stamen. It is vigorous and absolutely covered in flowers and likes full sun or partial shade. It is a wonderful climber and a joy to see in full bloom.
Clematis Perle D'Azure is planted in the rose garden at Sissinghurst Castle Garden in the UK and makes a wonderful backdrop to a Lutyens bench there.
This photograph has been through painter programme to develop the purple flush in the flower and highlight the beautiful stamens. The image won a Special Recognition Award in a 'Botanicals' on-line art exhibition organised by the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery.
