Originally the cockpit came from a pit to let roosters (cock) fight in for gambling purposes. Cockpit was also used for any narrow enclosed space. On Royal Navy warships in the 17th and 18th centuries the small space where junior officers were usually located was called the cockpit. And this is where the current meaning originated: the part in which a pilot controls an aircraft.
