'Marked by Time': a modern abstract painting of a layered, colourful leaf with droplets by Dirk van der Ven

A layered blend of colour and tangible depth that brings the cycle of the seasons to life on the wall.

In this work, you can see the complete cycle of the seasons captured on a single sheet. The vibrant greens of spring and summer clash sharply with the warm terracotta hues of autumn, whilst an icy winter blue cuts through the composition. The work gets straight to the point and evokes mixed feelings. What at first glance appear to be glistening water droplets transform, upon closer inspection, into the tangible traces of memories, sweat and tears.

The light falls harshly across the thick, stiff strokes of the palette knife, revealing the layering of the seasons. The eye is immediately drawn to the striking, central water droplet, the absolute focal point towards which all the other droplets seem to flow. This clear lens refracts the light and reflects the surroundings. This contrast between the mirror-smooth, fluid centre and the heavy, impasto paint textures of the green and terracotta beneath lends the image an intense optical depth.

The radial, organic forms lend the composition a natural sense of tranquillity. As this painting embraces all seasons simultaneously, the work transcends any fleeting trend. This balanced blend therefore blends effortlessly with every conceivable interior style, from sleek and modern to warm and classic. Its universal appeal makes the painting suitable for any setting, ensuring it continues to speak to the viewer in any space.
