About "Commemoration on the Coasts of Normandy"

by Kim Stijger

About the artwork

At the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, a place steeped in history, 9,387 US soldiers are buried, victims of World War II who gave their lives during the infamous Normandy landings. The peaceful landscape reflects the immense loss of so many young lives. The white crosses and Stars of David symbolise the sacrifices made in the fight for freedom. This cemetery is not only a resting place for the fallen soldiers, but also a place of remembrance for their families and for all of us.

The photograph captures a moment of reflection, where the serene setting highlights the harsh reality of war. As the sun slowly sets, the soft light casts long shadows across the lawns and the rows of crosses. This is a place of honour, a place where the effects of war are revived, but also where the power of peace is celebrated. Buried here is not only General Roosevelt, but also the memory of a time when heroes were made, but at an inhuman cost.

The cemetery tells a story of sacrifice, of courage, but also of the inescapable pain of loss. It reminds us that freedom can never be taken for granted and that we continue to honour the sacrifices of the dead.
